This video is the first of 9 chapters in my 81 minute documentary titled "The creation of abstract form in wood: Carving sculptural tables." The first chapter begins at my home and takes you along with me as I search the beach to reclaim massive myrtlewood timbers and root sections. Bay laurel is my wood of choice for creating  carved sculptures.

 •  Reclaiming myrtlewood from the beach. David Groth documentary, chapter 1 of 9.
 •  A studio discussion of creating abstract form in wood. David Groth documentary, chapter 2 of 9.

In this video segment I discuss four finished sculptural tables. My primary concern focuses on the creation of abstract form in wood. In later segments I will go further into the details involved with the carving and finishing process. This video is the second of 9 chapters in my 81 minute documentary titled "The creation of abstract form in wood: Carving sculptural tables."

I will include the 10 minute DVD titled "The Groth Fine Art Gallery; one family four visions". The video slide show documents selected artworks from my father Bruno Groth, mother Nita Groth, sister Nina Groth, and myself. This movie can also be viewed on YouTube from my channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/DavidGrothsculpture?feature=mhee

 •  Carving the sculptural table "Swallowtail." David Groth documentary, chapter 3 of 9.

In chapter 3 I will be rough carving from a wet 3,000 lb. myrtlewood root ball the abstract sculptural table that as it unfolds begins to remind me of a swallowtail butterfly.  This video is the third of 9 chapters in my 81 minute documentary titled "The creation of abstract form in wood: Carving sculptural tables."

 •  Carving the sculptural table "Marbled Murrelets". David Groth documentary, chapter 4 of 9.

In this video segment I will be carving two myrtlewood root sections and joining them into one sculptural table. The primary concern is that the two pieces of wood are shapes that can not only be joined but compliment each other sculpturally. This video is the fourth of 9 chapters in my 81 minute documentary titled "The creation of abstract form in wood: Carving sculptural tables."

 •  Carving the sculptural table "Guardians". David Groth documentary, chapter 5 of 9.

I will be carving the table top from the trunk of a myrtlewood tree and carving a root section that will form the sculptural base and both joined will make a unified abstract statement. This video is the fifth of 9 chapters in my 81 minute documentary titled "The creation of abstract form in wood: Carving sculptural tables."

 •  Carving the sculptural table "Roadrunner". David Groth documentary, chapter 6 of 9.

The legs and top forming this sculptural table will be carved from a single piece of wood that is the root section and trunk of a myrtlewood tree. As you will see there is quite a problem to solve in deciding how to approach making the initial cuts into this tree section.  This video is the sixth of 9 chapters in my 81 minute documentary titled "The creation of abstract form in wood: Carving sculptural tables."

 •  The discussion and refining of abstract form. David Groth documentary, chapter 7 of 9.

 •  Finishing sculptural table lines and surfaces. David Groth documentary, chapter 8 of 9.

In this video segment I discuss and carve design elements that can be refined and or changed to create a more dynamic sculptural statement. At this stage the pieces have already been rough carved and kiln dried and it is time to make final decisions that will give each piece greater cohesive form and movement. This video is the seventh of 9 chapters in my 81 minute documentary titled "The creation of abstract form in wood: Carving sculptural tables."

Defining lines in my sculpture creates movement and tension in the piece. Chiseling the surfaces creates a texture that not only is sensual to the touch but also adds an element of energy to the overall statement. This video is the eighth of 9 chapters in my 81 minute documentary titled "The creation of abstract form in wood: Carving sculptural tables."

 •  I will be completing the four sculptural tables. David Groth documentary, chapter 9 of 9.

Now the sculptural tables are just about completed and I will discuss, level and apply finish to the four pieces. This video is the ninth of 9 chapters in my 81 minute documentary titled "The creation of abstract form in wood: Carving sculptural tables."

“The Creation of Abstract Form in Wood; Carving Sculptural Tables” is an 81 minute DVD that documents reclaiming massive beach timbers and my process of transforming creative design into finished carved sculptural tables.
This documentary video can be viewed in its entirety on YouTube: It has been divided into nine sections and the links are on this page.  If you would like to have a DVD in the original 81-minute format it is available from me for $25, shipping included.
This one man exhibition of wood sculpture first exhibited at the Morris Graves Museum of Art in Eureka CA. A few months later the exhibit was shown by Heller Gallery at SOFA Chicago and "Mariner" #3 was chosen for the SOFA advertisement in American Craft magazine. This was the first time a wooden sculpture had been chosen for the ad. Next the exhibit moved on to New York , NY and was shown at Heller Gallery.
